This picture of a steam shovel and a steam engine is one of my favorites. This picture was taken in November 1906 -- eight months after the first steam shovel started open-pit mining in March of that year. A photo of the March startup is not as picturesque as this one. The level has obviously been well-established for some time.
The shovel is identified as a Marion Model 91 and is #3 of the Boston Con Mining Co. The shovel moves along a set of railroad tracks. It is digging ore or waste rock that has been blasted from a very high bank.
The steam engine (a Dinkey) is very small compared to later models. Note the workers riding on the front.
